Rear View Mirror

Yesterday, I watched the recording of “The Medium Is The Message” with Marshall McLuhan. I highly recommend it if you have not watched it, It was recorded in 1977, but the topics he explores are still relevant today. (it is in three parts about 15 minutes each)

In one of his responses to a question from the audience, mentions looking into a “rear view mirror” and exploring the reflection of your past. We often see different choices that we could have made, not seen in the moment. The process of looking in the rear view mirror helps us to identify choices to potentially improve our future. This is also something that helps to inform my creative process and the making of the art. It is beneficial to understand where you have been, before you try to figure out where you want to go.

A few thoughts I have been pondering today, relating to this. Often when we look back at the past one of several things happen:

1. We romanticize the events, thoughts and feelings, telling ourselves that it really not that horrible, if we had done that one thing, it would have fixed everything; it would have worked. We experience that inner ping of sadness for something that was so close to being perfect… but that one tiny thing messed it up. (I think every abusive relation is based on this thinking)

2. We have walked (run) away from the wreckage taking full account of damage and the necessary actions to repair, we remember it well, we remember and describe it more dramatic than it really was in the moment, but one thing is very clear, this moment will not happen again.

3. Then I took this out of the intended context, placing it on a larger playing field, beyond the scope of the individual. Applying it to a neighborhoods, or a city, state, country. How would that look in the rear view mirror Would this help make more informed choices? Would we really be able to see what is there or would history blur reality.

I think if we live our lives to the fullest they will be full of mistakes and not so good choices. Because this is how we learn and grow. It is through these less than perfect moments that we are given the opportunity to make different / better choices. I have peered in my rear view mirror often. Watching past events growing smaller in the distance as I drive forward.

What do you see when you peek at your rear view mirror?

How does that inform your future?

Calligraphy ~ kallos ‘beauty’ + graphein ‘write.’

As a culture we are surrounded by technology; computers, tablets and phones… thoughts and ideas reduced to 140 characters, micro-bits of information swarming from every direction and then gone forever. I am guilty of this as much as anyone else. The text or a quick email it is fast and efficient and sometimes only a reactionary response.

Each day when you open your postal mailbox what do you receive; bills, advertisements, catalogues, maybe a card or letter… which of these do you open first?

I have been teaching Calligraphy in the Chicago area for almost 10 years. It all started when I wanted to create my own title cards for an art exhibition I was participating in…and I just kept learning more and more scripts. I fell in love with the letters, the smell of the ink and the scratchy feel and sound of the pen nib on the page.

I teach calligraphy because I enjoy seeing people become interested in an art form that seem to be slowing slipping away. To watch them sit and figure out the process and learn something new and exciting. It makes me happy that I can share something with them, a new way for them to express themselves.

So maybe sometime when you open your mailbox there will be a special card or letter that someone loving addressed in the finest of Calligraphy they could do, sharing with you a very special moment.

I wanted to share some of the images from my last two workshops this week…. and maybe you might want to participate in one of my workshops or maybe host a workshop at your venue. Contact me at johnmichaelkorpal@gmail.com for more information about future workshops… The next best thing to receiving a hand written letter is sending one.

Time Moves Forward….

This week is about going through the website, dreaming and exploring new design ideas and taking steps to make room for future works.

The website will be slowly divided into two sites allowing each to expand and grow in different directions, As I move forward I am asking the question “What is relevant to me as an artist and what should live on the Flying Dolphin Studio site”. This seems the next necessary step, as both sites need additional room to expand and grow.

Revaluating the artwork what remains and what will be archived. Out with the old to make room for the new works! But in doing this it I have uncovered a process that I was not expecting. Time creates distance between the work and myself, an opportunity to view the work with different eyes. In the past this usually this makes me cringe, because I see all the mistakes (my perception not always based in the reality) of the work, but I notice things that I could have done differently, or better. This time I still like them I like them for what they are and what I have learned in the process of creating them. They are the expression of my thoughts, feeling and conflicts. Without them I would not be able to do the things I am able to do now.

So with all of this I wanted to share with you some of the works that will go away soon, this will be their last hurray! This will still be available for purchase just not on the website.

These were created when color still scared me. I was afraid to mix paint, because everything turned into either brown or grey. This is also when I felt that I needed to paint within the lines.Looking at past artwork put things into perspective helping me see how I have grown as an artist… and I am excited to see where this path may lead me.

Calligraphy Workshop ~Sulzer Library

Last night was a great success!

I was invited to deliver a 60-minute Calligraphy presentation at the Sulzer Library.  It was a great evening filled with creative fun with an attendance of over twenty individuals.

I totally enjoy participating in these, as I am always fascinated by the scope of diversity of individuals that participate. I am constantly humbled and mesmerized by the ways art connects us and provides a common language to share our history and stories with others.
